Freakscene's 12th Birthday
Only a week to go to our 12th Birthday, not in our wildest dreams did we imagine Freakscene would last this long, and right now it seems to be as popular as it has ever been judging by the large attendance we are enjoying! So thanks to you all yet again!
Doors 8.30p.m €7 but includes a free CD!
After a lot of deliberating last night we finally decided on a track list for 'In Your Dreams, Show No Mercy', the free CD you will all be receiving. It is a bit like a Freakscene set with a mixture of old and new songgs, including both popular and relatively obscure acts with a token novelty track, however this year there is a much greater emphasis on new music. It was really tough deciding the track list, I had hoped to include Bright Eyes, Super Furry Animals, Rilo Kiley, The Stars and Silver Jews but had to leave them off due to space constraints! The first 4 tracks are all by Canadian acts (can you guess?), whilst also including fabulous acts such as Saul Williams, Iron & Wine, Flaming Lips, Anthony & The Johnsons, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Sufjan Stevens, and The Go Team! to name but a few!
To win free passes check out 5 pairs of passes to be won
With regard to the night itself, it will kick off at 8.00p.m with our own little party with some food and drink for the bands involved at which they'll be presented with their 'Freakscene Artiste' badges to seperate them from the plebbs like. We'll also be presenting them with badges for their band as part payment so if you want to get your hands on an original Hope Is Noise or My Evil Ex badge, get along early and blag! At 8.30p.m the doors will open and the first band will be on stage shortly after. The bands will all be performing covers of their favoutie Freakscene/Danascene tunes, this worked a treat last year and some of the covers this year include Therapy?, Nine Inch Nails, Pixies and Talking Heads etc.....I believe My Evil Ex are playing as The Ex Pistols and plan to play a full-on punk set. If you didn't see the live acts for our 10th and 11th Birthdays, do get along early as otherwise you may miss a real treat!
The bands playing in no particular order of genius include!

If variety be the spice of life then The Lotion are very tasty indeed. Childhood sweethearts all, these five men wade out from the murky waters of music’s ocean to bask in the sunshine that is musical individuality. Or something like that. Combining complex rhythms with the kind of rock that existed before it became a dirty word, The Lotion are a unique blend of styles that defy categorisation. The only rule? If it feels good, play it!

Hope is Noise Biography
Originally formed in 2002, the band was then known as The New Messiahs. On the strength of the debut demo (which won Demo of the Fortnight in Hotpress, July 2003, and Best Hotpress First Cut, Red fm), the cork outfit began gigging furiously, headlining their own shows in Cork as well as gaining support slots with the likes of Blink, Berkley and The Revs. However, the start of 2005 resulted in the band deciding that a change in name was needed. This prompted by the loss of a band member, and some bad luck, which has plagued the band, namely the Cork Sunbeam fire, in which they lost 7000 euros worth of equipment. Wishing to shun all these losses, the band have resettled again (the remaining 4 members have been together since 1997, under various names) as a more comfortable and powerful 4 piece. Where once the band's emphasis was on the use of twin vocalists, the sole responsibility is now been undertaken by guitarist Dan, whose vocal style comprises of snarling screams and passionate laments and which are proving very popular on the local scene. This and the wall of sonic melodies created by the use of the dual guitars, always complimented by the catchiest of choruses, are the band's forte. "Words to burn you" is the band's first EP ("excellent performances...", Jackie Hayden, Hotpress), comprising of 3 tracks, which was produced by Blink guitarist Robbie Sexton. The EP was released in Cork on the 22nd April 2005. The band will continue gigging around Ireland, to promote their forthcoming new EP, as well as having just played at the "Rubberfreshtival" two-day rock festival in Salzburg, Austria, last July. For the record, Hope is Noise are the only Irish band to have ever played this festival, which has been running for the last 5 years! 2005 also saw Hope is Noise concentrating on their live performances with the aim of getting as many new fans as they could. The band recorded their new ep in October with Ciáran O’ Shea (Cyclefly) and should be available in early 2006. Hope is Noise was voted Best New Cork Act by the newspaper Cork Independent. The band was also selected to support Waiting Room as part of Murphy’s Live 2006.
Painting By Numbers
September 2005 saw the debut release from Cork based four- piece, Painting by Numbers. Formed in March 2005, the lineup includes Ronan McCann (Guitars, Vocals), Darragh Enright, (Drums), David Nelligan (Guitars), and Diarmuid Galvin (Bass).Drawing from a myriad of influences which include the likes of R.E.M, Pixies, Crowded House, and the Flaming Lips, Painting By Numbers have carved their own distinctive sound, fusing shimmering guitars with a driving rhythm section and memorable vocal melodies.
The 5 track E.P., simply entitled Painting by Numbers, is currently available from Plugged records on Washington st, priced €5.99

Press
Having supported both JJ72 & Vinny Peculiar (featuring Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke of the Smiths) on their Irish tours, My Evil Ex earned the reputation of being one of the most entertaining and original bands around. The music of My Evil Ex has been described as “Nick Cave molesting Jeff Buckley” due to the haunting vocals, powerful song writing and energetic live performance. My Evil Ex provides the perfect foil for Dylan’s songs which range from dark and atmospheric to the subtle and beautiful.
Dylan & My Evil Ex feature’s Dylan on Acoustic Guitar and Vocals with Johnny B (Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals), Amy McKenna (Backing Vocals) & Ronan McGrath (Bass). Their current EP Approval has met with critical and musical acclaim leading to articles being written on the band, the EP and live performances.
"Intelligent lyrics, finely crafted songs and strong vocal and musical arrangements…Dylan & My Evil Ex are a band to watch."
Colm O’Sullivan Red Fm.
"If Jack The Ripper wielded an acoustic guitar the same way he wielded a scalpel, the result might not be a million miles from this"
Don O’ Mahonay Evening Echo.
"They are tight and proficient and proceed to woo us with a full, well-paced set of intelligent indie-rock. The fact that this reviewer came away from their set without obvious comparisons is usually a good sign. He'll happily give My Evil Ex a second look in the future."
