Beastie Boys - In a World Gone Mad

Beastie Boys

Outside America those who criticise the Iraq war are all too often accused of being anti-American, similarly inside America you're accused of being unpatriotic. Set against this background you have to admire the Beastie Boys for making a stand and making this song free to download from beastieboys.com or nme.com Musically it's a typical funky Beastie Boys track but lyrically it's brilliant with absolutely no prisoners taken, here are a just a couple of segments:

'Gorge Bush you're looking like Zoolander
Trying to play tough for the camera'

As your mid-life crisis war unfolds
All you want to do is take control
Now put that axis of evil bullshit on hold
Citizen rule number 2080
Politicians are shady
So people watch your back 'cause I think they smoke crack
I don't doubt it look at how they act

Well I'll be sleeping on your speeches 'til I start to snore
'Cause I won't carry guns for an oil war
As-Salamu alaikum, wa alaikum assalam
Peace to the Middle East peace to Islam
Now don't get us wrong 'cause we love America
But that's no reason to get hysterica
They're layin' on the syrup thick
We ain't waffles we ain't havin' it

This isn't just a great anti-war song, it's a great song!

The Thrills - One Horse Town

DJ Format The second single from this Dublin band is a real treat, there are echoes of Teenage Fanclub with a hint of Brian Wilson here and there. The song itself is immediately catchy and it's great to see they are getting the airplay and exposure they richly deserve.

DJ Format - We Know Something You Don't Know

DJ Format Even my Granny knows Hip-Hop is gone to shite, they're even rapping about their 4 X 4 Jeeps these days. DJ Format is a breath of fresh air for those of you who love the music but are tired of the clichés, this single features 2NA & Akil from Jurassic 5. It's funky, melodic, fun, intelligent and is accompanied by a great video so will surely be a hit!

White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

White Stripes MP3s are going to destroy the music industry if we are to believe Metallica and Madonna, well maybe they'll save vinyl! The White Stripes have released this single on 7" vinyl to help prevent internet piracy. If they are successful, I assume more bands will follow! The very last thing you expect from this brother/sister combo is a funky base line intro (seeing as they don't have a base player) but that is just what you get. Aside from that, all the raw energy and blues influences we witnessed in their debut album are here in strength again. Meg sings a slow raunchy sixties style pop song called 'The Cold, Cold, Night' on the B-side.

The Cardigans - For What it's Worth

The Cardigans It's been a few years since we've heard anything from the Cardigans. The bad news is that Nina has gone darker, my favourite blonde is now a brunette but thankfully the band's style hasn't changed. Perfect pop is still the order of the day. This single also contains a great cover of Kraftwerk's Model sung in German.

Jesse Malin - Queen of the Underworld

Jesse Malin Rather annoyingly a great deal is being made of the fact that this album was produced by Ryan Adams. There is a huge sticker on the single which says so. Queen of the Underworld has one of the catchiest intros of the year as Jesse croons 'You say you want a revolution.....' before launching into a laid back somewhat funky melodic number. The B-sides ain't bad either showing that he at least has more talent than his over-rated producer.

Radio 4 - Eyes Wide Open

radio4.jpg Radio 4 are a New York five piece (who in this single at least) are heavily influenced by the Clash, not just in thier sound which is funky rock, but this song also has plenty of attitude and political edge. I'm sure Joe would be proud.

Beth Gibbons - Tom The Model

Beth Gibbons

Beth Gibbons the former lead singer with Portishead is back with an a gem of a debut single. Reminiscent of one of those heart wrenching 60s soul classics. It's taken from last year's album and though the album is quite good this is easily the best track from it.
